Name: Percival
Canon: Granblue Fantasy
Canon Point: After the event "SIEGFRIED"
Age: 27
Background:
Personality: Percival is a man of great presence, and those he meets are left with a lasting impression. Whether that impression is good or bad depends on what side of him they meet, as well as their patience for his bristly demeanor. Put simply, Percival is a man who doesn’t mince words. He speaks exactly what’s on his mind, oftentimes without regard to how it will make others feel. He can be quick to call someone an idiot, incompetent, or to express exasperation for anything that displeases him. This can make it difficult to be around him, unless one happens to have a good deal of patience or have been exposed to him enough times to realize that this is all a facade.
The truth is, Percival has an extremely good heart, and he simply cannot stop himself from helping others in need. Because of this, his scathing words are often tough love rather than true insults. This duality of his personality is in large part due to his upbringing. He was born into an aristocratic family, to a father who raised his three sons with the principle that their decisions should not ever be governed by emotions. In contrast, his mother was a gentler soul. She taught Percival he should always help others in need, especially since they were born into privilege. Percival experienced the tragedy of his mother dying at the hands of the very same refugees they had helped earlier in the day. Her dying words to him were, “please be kind, do not hold grudges”.
Percival has taken these words to heart. He is completely incapable of not helping anyone who asks for it, even if he seems to do so begrudgingly. He is the embodiment of noblesse oblige - the powerful should protect the weak who are unable to protect themselves. Like his mother asked him to, he doesn’t hold grudges, either. When his brother turns to summoning demons in an effort to seize power, he forgives him soon after defeating him.
His conviction is strong. Percival’s dream is to create a nation as close to a utopia as possible. He wishes to create a land in which the weak do not suffer, a land without war. To this end, he recruits people to serve as his vassals, the main character included. But it is clear that the word “vassal” really means “friend”, given that this is a title only bestowed to the people Percival respects the most. He regards the main character as a comrade rather than an underling, and in fact often defers to whatever the main character decides is the best course of action.
And once Percival considers you a friend, there is nothing he won’t do for you. He is extremely loyal, and gaining his friendship allows one to observe the softer sides of his personality. Although his attitude is very no-nonsense and businesslike, he is capable of relaxing and participating in festivities. During the first Valentines’ day event, he claims to not enjoy chocolate but accepts it to “not make Captain upset”. The following years, however, he eats his chocolate quickly so that “the heat won’t melt it and ruin the flavor”. In typical tsundere behavior, his words say one thing and his actions show the complete opposite. He’s a softie.
He is confident to the point of arrogance. Although he isn’t outwardly and vocally vain, he carries himself with confidence that shows that he is aware of his good looks and competence. This extends to his skills in combat, of course, but he isn’t naive enough to think that there isn’t always room for improvement. He’s juuuust cocky enough to be obnoxious to others.
Lastly, addressing Percival’s relationship with each of the dragon knights gives us insight to other facets of his personality. He and Lancelot have been friendly rivals since their teenage years, constantly competing and testing their skills against one another. The two remain competitive to this day, and have a mutual respect for each other. There are no hurt feelings when one imparts tough love on the other, and it is clear that they regard themselves as equals.
His relationship with Vane is largely antagonistic, but in a humorous way. Vane is loud, cheerful, and dense, making it easy for Percival to call him a loud idiot. Initially, he pretends to not even remember Vane from their early training days. Vane brings out the playfully sadistic side of him, as Percival seems to enjoy calling him a mongrel even when he’s in a good mood. But when it comes down to it, the two men have each other’s backs, both socially and on the battlefield. Vane very easily calls him out on his haughtiness being nothing but a facade, which never fails at flustering Percival.
Siegfried is a man he admires as his former mentor. He has no qualms admitting that he was charmed by the other knight, even when he believed that Siegfried was a traitor and a murderer at the time. But respecting someone and adopting their teachings doesn’t make them immune to Percival’s tough love. He scolds Siegfried for things as trivial as not taking better care of himself, as well as more serious matters like Siegfried having trouble trusting the other knights in his affairs.
In a nutshell, Percival is a man who pretends not to care, when really, he cares way, way too much. And everyone but him can totally see it.
Powers: Percival is an expert swordsman, and his specialty is that of fire magic. He deals in fire-based attacks and can manipulate the element. He can also cast buffs that increase the attack power of allies. His secondary specialty is Light damage.
Inventory: His swords: Lohengrin, Walthari, and Antwerp. His wardrobe, which consists of his battle armor, his summer outfit, his Dragon Knight outfit, his Christmas outfit, and his Light battle armor.
